1.1 Welcome to Country

Welcome to Yorta Yorta country

As your learning journey brings you to study and work across the region that encompasses Wangaratta, Benalla, Shepparton, Echuca, Yarrawonga, Cobram, Kyabram, Nathalia and anywhere in between, you are on the Ancestral Lands of the Yorta Yorta people.

If you are undertaking your working or training on another traditional country, this module will provide important learnings but you will need to visit, learn from and engage with the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and traditional owners of that area.

It is important that you tread softly on this land, show respect and acknowledge the land that you are on. Yorta Yorta Nation are the Registered Aboriginal Party for this region; however, it is important to note that Bangerang people have strong ancestral ties to this region also.

This happens in other regions also, different groups may live and recognise an area as their traditional lands.

We have many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across the nation who call this area home today, so be mindful that we are not all Aboriginal or all Yorta Yorta people.

We have a rich and wonderful history and as you spend time here, I encourage you to take this opportunity to learn about our history, connect with Aboriginal people, and hear their stories about their Ancestral history.

Your learning journey could include visiting Aboriginal organisations such as the ACCHO’s e.g. Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative (Mooroopna) and Njernda Aboriginal Corporation (Echuca). The Viney Morgan Aboriginal Medical Service (Cummeragunga Mission) is also situated on Yorta Yorta country but over the border in NSW.

If you are working a little further afield in Wodonga the local ACCHO is Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation, which is located on Duduroa country.

If as far afield as Ballarat you have the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative which sits on the land of the Wathaurong/Wadawurrung people.

Other opportunities for connecting may be with Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Bangerang Cultural Centre or through sport at Rumbalara Football and Netball Club which are all situated in the Goulburn Valley.

I encourage you to be aware of opportunities that arise and take every opportunity to be a part of these, to not only support your learning journey but to also make community connections, show respect for community and to enhance your ongoing practice when working with our people.
