Cummeragunga Mission
Hey, Great to see you here.
This is my gift to you – to provide you with a safe learning environment, at your pace – to build on your knowledge and ways of working with our peoples now and into the future.
But this course is more than just learning about times and dates in Aboriginal history – it is about understanding Aboriginal people, families and communities, country and spirit – and recognising how everything is connected. We are all part of the ecosystem that is our land and country, air and water, all creatures, up in the sky, and those down on and in the earth. We are at one with our land, sky, water and all that lives within it.
Over thousands of years our knowledge has been passed on through stories, art, songs, dance and shared lived experiences – to our children, families, communities and across the generations. This is what sustains us.
The question is, when and how are you intersecting in your life, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people? What does this look like? Is it positive and uplifting?
When you work with our people’s you need to be acutely aware of the need for:
cultural safety,
clear communication,
the principles of self-determination and strength-based work,
our right to informed consent and health literacy,
the need for decision-making protocols and agreements, partnerships and referral processes.
…and so much more.
You don’t need to know everything – but you need to know we are different in our beliefs, values, practices, protocols and ways of being, doing, knowing, belonging, engaging.
What matters is your willingness to learn, listen, reflect, ask questions, seek greater understanding, and be culturally safe and respectful.
I will share knowledge, stories and my experiences gathered over 40 years of experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the broader community and agencies around Victoria and the nation – including health, employment, education, community services, government and community development projects across four modules.
I have no doubt you will significantly increase your knowledge as you weave your way through each module.
Going Forward – Looking Back:
In 1.1 Truth Telling: I start this journey by providing you with some incredible learnings borne out of Yorta Yorta country. This is where the Aboriginal political activism started, and what some today call, the ‘Cummeragunga Invincible Spirit’. This is an important story to tell as it sets the stage for what is to come.
However please understand that there are deadly stories of great Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women – Warriors and Winyas (Yorta Yorta Language for women) in every tribe across mainland Australia and into the Torres Strait Islands.
I therefore strongly encourage you extend your learning to more local on-country education with the traditional owners of the land on which you live, work and play, so that you understand their history, Ancestors, culture, and strength. That knowledge will not only empower you in your work and life, as you go forward into the future.
Come, Walk with Me as we Journey together through Mulana Gurranyin….
