Module Overview

This module provides an introduction and welcome to Yorta Yorta country and includes historical context from a global, national and local perspective.

To work with Aboriginal people today, it is necessary for you to have some level of understanding about the strength, resilience and cultural pride of Aboriginal families, communities and cultures.

And through ‘truth-telling’ learn about Aboriginal history and experiences that have led to this point in time where Aboriginal Australians are experiencing the worst life expectancy gap on the planet.

Key Learnings

Upon completing this package, participants will demonstrate:

  1. An introduction to Aboriginal history in Australia and regionally.
  2. A greater knowledge of the definition of cultural competency in the context of the online course.
  3. An understanding of the shared experiences and diversity of Aboriginal people.
  4. A greater understanding of the factors impacting Aboriginal health and wellbeing today.
  5. An awareness of the Aboriginal Health service sector and services available regionally.
  6. An extended knowledge of Australian legislation and associated government frameworks in place to improve the life expectancy of Aboriginal people.
  7. A clearer understanding of the difference between Aboriginal health and wellbeing services and Traditional owner organisations.
  8. A greater knowledge of key water-shed moments in Aboriginal history.
